A spread is a set of questions with cards attached. That is the whole idea, and it is why the position matters at least as much as the card. The Hermit in “what is happening” is a description; the same card in “what deserves your attention” is an instruction. Change the position and you have changed the reading without touching the deck.

Which is also why the spreads here avoid a position you will see everywhere else — the one that asks what somebody else is secretly thinking. It produces readings that feel dramatic and cannot be acted on, because the answer is unverifiable by design. Every position below asks something you could actually examine.

Which tarot spread should you use?

The fastest way to pick a layout is to match the number of cards to how many moving parts the question has. One card for one thing; a full Celtic Cross when you genuinely cannot see the shape of the situation. Anything larger than the question is padding.

Spread Cards Best for Not for
One Card 1 A narrow question with a single focus, or a daily check-in. A tangled situation with several moving parts, or a decision between two options.
Three Card 3 Almost any real question. Three cards is the smallest spread with genuine structure. Comparing more than two options, or a question you have already asked twice this week.
Past, Present, Future 3 Understanding how a situation got here and where its momentum points. Anything you want a date or a guarantee from.
Love 3 A live connection you are inside and cannot see clearly. Finding out what the other person privately feels. No spread does that.
Relationship 3 An established relationship where something has shifted and you cannot name it. Deciding whether to stay — use the crossroads spread for that.
Ex 3 A breakup that has not finished being a breakup. Establishing whether they will come back. No spread can carry that.
Decision 3 A genuine choice between two things you could actually do. A choice you have already made and want permission for.
Career 3 Direction, stuckness and whether the obstacle you assume is the real one. Whether you will get a specific job. That is an outcome outside your control.
Money 3 Spending patterns, a specific financial decision, and what you are not accounting for. Investments, markets, crypto, gambling or any prediction about an amount.
Celtic Cross 10 A genuinely complex situation with history, other people and competing pressures. A simple question. Ten cards on a narrow question produces noise, not depth.
Self Love 3 Patterns you keep repeating, and questions that are really about you. A substitute for support when something is genuinely wrong. See a person for that.

Or skip the layout and just ask your question.

What is a tarot spread?

A layout that assigns each card a position, and each position a question. The positions are what turn a pile of cards into a reading — the same card means something different in "what you are not seeing" than it does in "what deserves your attention".

How many cards should a tarot spread have?

Fewer than most people use. Three cards is enough structure for almost any live question. Ten cards on a narrow question mostly produces noise, because a large spread invites you to find meaning that is not there.

What is the best tarot spread for beginners?

A three card spread with positions you chose deliberately. It has enough structure to teach you how positions change a card, and few enough cards that you can hold the whole reading in your head at once.

Can I make up my own tarot spread?

Yes, and it is often better than borrowing one. The only rule that matters: every position should ask something you could actually act on. Positions that ask what another person is secretly thinking produce readings that feel dramatic and cannot be used.
